From Casual Game to Social Tradition: Bocce at BallenIsles

At BallenIsles Country Club, bocce has moved far beyond its start as a small initiative. In just two years, a casual game has grown into one of the Club’s liveliest social traditions, pairing friendly competition with conversation and shared time that extends well beyond the courts.

The appeal is visible in the way Members use the space. Bocce is not simply a match on the calendar; it has become a reason to gather with friends, spend time with family, cheer for teammates and settle into a more relaxed rhythm of Club life.

From Two Courts to a League of More Than 800

When the bocce league launched in 2024, 200 players formed 20 teams and competed on just two courts. From the beginning, Members embraced the activity not only for the game itself, but also as an easy way to gather with friends and family and enjoy a more social side of the Club.

Interest kept building. BallenIsles added two more courts, allowing participation to expand to more than 810 Members across 61 registered teams. That growth has made bocce one of the Club’s most popular social activities.

The numbers tell only part of the story. The atmosphere surrounding the courts has become just as important, giving Members a place to connect, unwind and spend time together within the broader private club lifestyle.

Four Evenings a Week Bring the Courts to Life

League play now runs Sunday through Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., creating a steady social energy throughout the season. As late afternoon moves into evening, the courts fill with conversation, laughter and friendly competition.

Members come to play, cheer for teammates, catch up with neighbors or simply watch the matches unfold. That mix of participation and conversation has made bocce a regular part of the Club’s social calendar and a familiar gathering point during the week.

The Gathering Continues Off the Court

As participation increased, BallenIsles expanded what surrounds the game as well. The on-site bocce bar gives Members another place to meet before, during and after matches, adding a social layer to the evening beyond the competition itself.

Handcrafted cocktails, casual conversation and the energy of the courts now share the same setting. Members can also order from a limited menu for courtside delivery during league play or convenient pick-up on non-league days.

Those additions have helped turn bocce from a scheduled activity into something Members can build an evening around, creating a tradition they return to week after week.

A Small Game That Reflects a Larger Club Culture

What makes bocce notable at BallenIsles is not only how quickly the league has expanded. Its popularity reflects the way activity and connection come together throughout the community.

Beyond the bocce courts, Members have access to championship golf, racquet sports, wellness, dining and a year-round schedule of social events. An afternoon on the course, dinner with friends or an evening around the bocce courts all fit within a Club life shaped by shared activity and time together.

From a 200-player start to one of the Club’s most anticipated traditions, bocce has become another part of what distinguishes BallenIsles. Its growth shows how a simple game can become a lasting part of the community’s social rhythm.
